I awoke slowly, my head spinning like a top and my mind replaying the gunshot over and over again. I had been shot before. Hell, I had been shot more times than I cared to count at this point. Still, there was something about this incident that really got under my skin. I didn’t know if it was because I was older or because of just how much was at stake right now, but I felt shaken up. I felt like I had been put in a blender and spun all around. More than that, I felt tired.

The beeping of the machine I was hooked into let me know I was in the hospital. Of course, I didn’t really need to hear anything to know that. I had woken up in enough hospitals to know what it felt like. I knew the dull ache. I knew the low hum of fluorescent lights. I knew the scratch of the paper-thin linen.

Taking as deep a breath as I could muster, I forced my eyes open. The light, bright and unblinking, shone down on me, stinging my eyes and bringing tears to them. It caused my head to ache. Of course, to be fair, there were probably a million reasons my head would be hurting right now. I blinked. Pulling my arm up in an attempt to rub my eyes, I found them bound. Looking over, I saw that both of my hands were cuffed to either railing. I groaned, looking down at them.

“You weren’t supposed to leave the state,” a voice said from above me. Looking up, I saw Andy leaned against the wall wearing different clothes than he had worn the last time I saw him. In fact, his face held a red fuzz that it didn’t have then either. Suddenly, I wondered just how long I had been out. “Apparently, the judge you guys have down there is a hard ass.”

“Yeah,” I croaked out, my throat screaming for water. “He’s not the best.”

“I’m glad to see that you’re up. You were gone for awhile.”

“How long is awhile?” I asked, sitting up as much as I could.

“Three days and some change,” Andy said. “You lost a lot of blood. You had to have a transfusion and everything.”

“My God,” I said, my eyes wide as I began to look at this completely differently. I couldn’t afford to lose three days. There was too much going on, too many people who needed my help.

“I need my phone. I need to call my brother,” I said, looking around and wondering where my stuff was.

“You don’t need a phone for that. Just holler real loud,” Andy said as a smile moved across his face. “He just went down to the cafeteria to get some lunch. He’s been here since right after it happened. Hasn’t left for more than half an hour. He’s going to be mad that he missed you waking up.”

“Yeah. Well, Lucky boys never had much pin the way of timing,” I said. “I presume I’m under arrest.
